Tom’s Teas introduces a healthy drinks Category for Children

Tom’s Teas, finalist for Food & Drink Innovation Award at the Coffee Shop Innovation Expo 2019, introduces their range of children’s fruit teas as a healthy alternative drink for children.
As a parent frustrated by the lack of healthy drinks choices for children, I launched Tom’s Teas in 2018 as a deliciously fruity alternative to sugary or sweetened drinks.  Our range of dessert inspired fruit tea blends contain no caffeine, no added sugar or artificial sweeteners and can be enjoyed hot or cold.  Our 4 flavour blends are Peaches and Cream, Cherry Pie, Tropical Twist and Rhubarb and Custard.
In recent years there’s been an explosion of variety in the adults drinks market, yet this growth in innovation has not been offered to the children’s market, their choice is water, squash, juice or smoothies.  The non-water options are often packed with sugar or sweeteners and with Childhood obesity as one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century (WHO), there is a need to provide children with a healthy and tasty drinks offering.  Around a third of children aged 2 to 15 in the UK are overweight or obese (The Kings Fund 2018) and sugary drinks are one of the main contributing factors to obesity
In addition, the effects of sugar on tooth decay in children is of major concern in the UK and dental extraction  is now the number one reason for hospital admissions among young children (British Dental Association). The oral health survey of 5 year olds in 2017 showed that just under a quarter have tooth decay (National Dental Epidemiology Programme for England, 2017) and improving the oral health of children is a Public Health England (PHE) priority.
Tom’s Teas offer an innovative, versatile and healthy new drinks category, and since its launch I have taken the teas for taste testing with children and families across a wide demography.  From London to Sussex, Kent, Nottinghamshire and Cheshire, from big consumer shows to school fairs across boroughs London, the teas have been fantastically well received with comments often stating that “they taste as good as they smell!”.
Tom’s Teas also give children a choice of drink whilst enjoying tea of coffee time with their grownups, which many parents report their child wants to join in with.   The offering in coffee shops for children is often only hot chocolate or frothy milk for hot drinks and juice for cold.  Tom’s Teas enables children to join in with their grownups tea or coffee time with a delicious drink that has been created just for them and is also plastic free.
Children enjoy the choice of having their tea served hot or cold, where their “Time out for me, time out for tea” will leave them feeling warm and relaxed or cool and refreshed at any time of day.
